The Room Is Bright. The Plant Disagrees.
We recently arrived at a client's site and heard a sentence we hear quite often: βThe room gets loads of light.β Looking around, you could understand why they thought so. There were windows along one side, the ceiling lights were on and everyone could see perfectly well. Nobody was bumping into the furniture.
The plants were less convinced. The client wanted something beautiful and quite ambitious, but the planting already in the room was struggling. Once we looked at the position from the plant's point of view, the reason became clearer. The windows were present, but they did not bring consistent natural light to the place where the plants actually stood. What felt like a bright interior was relying heavily on electric light, and winter made the gap even wider.
This is an easy mistake to make because people rarely enter a hotel, office or restaurant and assess the light as a plant would. We notice whether the room feels gloomy, whether we can read and whether the lighting creates the right atmosphere. A plant is dealing with a more practical question: is enough usable light reaching its leaves, at sufficient intensity, for enough of the day?
The difference matters before a scheme is installed. It also matters later, when a client quite reasonably asks why regular maintenance has not helped a particular plant to thrive.
What the windows were actually doing
On that visit, the conversation began with the windows because they seemed like the obvious evidence. The difficulty was that their direction, the surrounding buildings and the depth of the room all affected what reached the planting position. A window can make a room pleasant for people while doing very little for a plant several metres away.
Our eyes are wonderfully accommodating in these situations. They adjust as we move from a brighter area into a dimmer one, and the electric lighting smooths out the difference. The whole room appears fairly even to us, while the amount of natural light can change dramatically between the window and the back wall.
The Royal Horticultural Society notes that many indoor plants struggle in positions set back from windows. It also points out that light changes through the day and across the seasons. This is particularly relevant in London, where a position that appears generous on a long summer afternoon may offer very little by the middle of winter.
So when we assess a room, the existence of a window is only the start. We are interested in where it faces, what sits outside it, how far the proposed plants will be from the glass and how long useful daylight reaches that exact position. Blinds, tinted glass, nearby buildings and internal partitions all join the conversation, whether or not they appeared in the original planting brief.
Why the ceiling lights did not solve it
The client then pointed to the electric lighting, which again made complete sense. The room was full of it. The confusion comes from the fact that most interior lighting has been chosen to help people use and enjoy a space. It has usually been designed around visibility, atmosphere, colour and energy use, without any obligation to keep a tropical plant healthy beneath it.
Plants need enough light of suitable wavelengths for enough hours of the day. A decorative pendant or warm spotlight may look bright while delivering very little useful light to foliage, especially when it is high above the plant or aimed towards a table, wall or artwork. Adding a few more ordinary bulbs can make the room look brighter and leave the horticultural problem largely unchanged.
Suitable grow lighting is different and can genuinely open up difficult positions. The RHS guidance on artificial lighting explains that plants from naturally lower-light habitats can be kept healthy under an appropriate system. The type of fitting matters, as do its distance from the leaves, the area it covers and the number of hours it operates.
We have seen this work well in spaces where the design ambition was worth supporting properly. It needs to be treated as part of the planting scheme, with the lighting and plants considered together. A single fitting that gives one leaf an excellent day while the rest of the plant sits in shade has solved a very small part of the problem.
For a completely dark position, the role of artificial lighting is easier to recognise. We have written separately about using real plants in a windowless hotel corridor. Rooms that appear bright are more deceptive because everybody assumes the light question has already been answered.
The awkward limit of plant maintenance
By this point in a site visit, the conversation often moves towards maintenance. Could more frequent visits help? Is there something different the maintenance team could do? Sometimes the answer is yes. Watering can be adjusted, foliage cleaned, pests managed and the plant moved before a period of stress becomes a full decline.
There is still a limit. Maintenance can help a plant make the most of a workable environment, but it cannot keep compensating for an environment that never suited the plant in the first place. Low light can make watering especially delicate because a slower-growing plant generally uses water more slowly. Responding to every yellow leaf with extra water may add a root problem to the light problem, which is rather unfair on everybody involved.
This is worth being explicit about when a maintenance agreement begins. A regular visit is care, judgement and early intervention. It is not a promise that any plant can be placed in any corner and persuaded to enjoy itself.
Where a client wants a particular specimen despite the conditions, there also needs to be an honest conversation about replacement. The plant may look wonderful for a period and then need changing more often because it is unlikely to thrive there long term. That can be a conscious commercial choice, but it should never arrive six months later disguised as a mysterious failure of maintenance.
The three versions of the project
Back at the client site, the assessment did not mean abandoning the idea of beautiful planting. It gave us three possible versions of it, each with a different compromise.
1. Adapt the planting
We could choose plants better suited to the available light, move the most ambitious specimens closer to the windows or concentrate the greenery into fewer positions where the building could genuinely support it. This changes the original picture, though scale, grouping and silhouette can still create a generous scheme without scattering struggling plants across the whole room.
2. Improve the conditions
Suitable grow lighting protected more of the original ambition, while adding a technical requirement to the design. Coverage, operating hours, appearance and access for future adjustment all needed to be considered before choosing the final plants.
3. Accept the replacement consequence
The client could keep a desired plant in the difficult position and accept that it might need replacing more often. Clients occasionally decide that a particular effect matters enough to justify this. We prefer to improve the conditions or change the specification where possible, because repeated decline is a poor plan for living material. Still, an informed decision is very different from selling someone an expectation that the room cannot meet.
Keeping the ambitious idea alive
None of this is an argument for cautious planting. Greenarium likes tropical specimens with presence, and the most exciting option is rarely the smallest plant with the greatest tolerance for neglect. Strong ideas simply last longer when the environment joins the design conversation early enough.
That means assessing the proposed plant position rather than giving the room a general verdict. It means looking at daylight across the day and year, separating decorative lighting from plant lighting, and deciding which part of the scheme can change if the conditions and ambition do not yet agree.
If the environmental assessment happens after everyone has fallen in love with the hero plant, it tends to be received as rather inconvenient paperwork. When it happens first, it becomes useful design information. The team can decide where lighting is worth adding, where a different plant will work better and where the building has been offering an impression of brightness that the plants cannot use.
The client who told us their room had loads of light was not being careless. They were describing exactly what the room felt like to a person standing in it. Our job was to explain why the plants were having a different experience, and then find a version of the scheme that both the client and the plants could live with.
